What to Check Before Renting a House in Pakistan

A rental listing can be accurate and still hide problems you only see on site. Take a short checklist to the viewing and fill it before you discuss money.

The building and the rooms

Walk every room you will use, including the kitchen and each bathroom. Look at the ceiling for damp, the walls for cracks you would want explained, and the floors for movement or damage. Open windows. Try the locks you will rely on.

If the property is a portion of a house, confirm which stairs, roof, and yard you may use.

Water, electricity, and gas

Run taps. Ask where water is stored and how often it is filled. Switch lights in each room. Ask what backup exists and who maintains it. If gas is promised, ask how it is supplied. None of this requires a specialist — it requires you to look and to write down the owner’s answers.

Access, parking, and neighbours

Arrive the way you would come home from work. Note the road, the gate, and parking. Stand outside for a minute and listen. A quiet photo set can sit on a loud street.

Papers and people

Ask to see that the person you are meeting can let the property — they are the owner, or the owner has authorised them. You do not need to complete a legal review on the doorstep, but you should know who you are contracting with.

Terms before a deposit

Confirm rent, due date, deposit, term, who pays which utility, and what must be returned at the end. Put that in writing. Then, and only then, transfer money to the person named in that document.
