Read building details, not just the rent

A flat listing should say enough for you to know the type of property and the location. Ask the owner about floor number, lift, parking, gas, and water if those lines are empty. In a walk-up building, climb the stairs once with shopping bags in mind.

Ask who manages the building and what monthly charges exist, if any. Those charges are not always in the advertised rent.

Inspect like you will live there

Visit in daylight. Check kitchen water, bathroom drainage, and whether windows open onto a wall or a street. Listen for noise from a nearby road or commercial plot. Confirm how you will enter after late hours.

Agree terms with the owner
